About the new Canvas prints

One of the most exciting developments in photographic print display is the use of canvas. Canvas is especially appropriate for large prints because it does not require the use of matting or glass – it’s a much lighter, virtually reflection-less format. Just in the last few years, archival canvas products have been further improved to accommodate the needs of fine art photography – images printed on archival canvas can maintain their original integrity for many decades and beyond. “Painterly” images like many of the empty waves on this website are perfect candidates for this type of display and can really make a room come to life. If you have any questions about our new canvas offerings, please don’t hesitate to email us at gilleyfoto@aol.com.

About recent changes to thesurfcollection.com

In order to pass along a better value to our customers, The Surf Collection is now offering our line of limited edition photographs as matted prints. Although we no longer offer frame choices, we have produced most of these double matted archival images in standard sizes that fit pre-made frames that are available at most art stores. This gives the customer more freedom in selecting the desired frame, provides high-quality matting for a great price, and can save the customer alot of money by avoiding custom framing.

About the Photographer

All photographs on thesurfcollection.com were taken by Rob Gilley. Rob has been a staff photographer for Surfer magazine since 1986, and has been one of the most widely published surf photographers in the world for over two decades. In addition, he recently became a Surfing Magazine staff photographer, has also served as photography editor for both Surfer and The Surfer's Journal, has over 30 cover shots to his credit, and was the winner of the 2002 Surfer magazine photo of the year award. Rob received his Visual Arts degree from the University of California at San Diego, and has been completely immersed in surf photography for over 20 years.

About the Prints

All of the images for sale on this website are high-quality fine art prints reproduced on Fuji Crystal Archive photographic paper or archival canvas. The photos themselves were shot on super fine grain 35mm color transparency film, high contrast black and white negative or transparency film, or with a state-of-the-art digital camera. Fine art photographic printing allows for a higher fidelity to the original transparencies and scans than standard digital or Type-R prints, offer better control of exact color and tone matching, and add the ability to make significantly large reproductions without sacrificing quality. In addition, the archival paper and canvas products used for these photographs will preserve the images' original integrity for many decades, and are a common photographic paper for some of the best museums and galleries on the planet. The surfacing for the photographic prints are glossy for color and matte for black and white.

About the Limited Edition Prints

All photographs in our limited edition line are subject to a pre-determined, numbered run of prints*. Once that edition of reproductions are sold, no photographic prints will ever be made of that image again. All limited edition matted prints larger than 11 x 14 are vacuum mounted on foam core to ensure the optimum presentation of the photographs. For details on mounting, see the About Mounting section. In addition, each limited editon print is tastefully signed and numbered on the bottom front corners of the print itself with silver or gold extra fine point markers, and the black and white images are signed on the mats in pencil.

* The number of prints for each individual photograph is written on the prints themselves.

About Shipping

The Surf Collection uses U.S. Priority Mail to ship all domestic print orders, and Internation Express Mail to ship foreign orders. If you need to arrange another method of shipping for your order, please email us at gilleyfoto@aol.com.

About Mounting

As mentioned in the About the Limited Edition Prints section, all of our limited edition matted prints are mounted on foam core to facilitate optimum presentation for the prints. Although the new generation of archival photographic papers is superior to its predecessors in many ways, it has a tendency to wrinkle or produce "waves" in the surface of the print if it is not mounted before framing. This effect can become progressively unsightly over time, and is mostly due to fluxuating humidity levels.

About Matting

All our limited edition prints come matted with museum quality acid-free bevel cut Crescent and Bainbridge board mats. The border seperation between the double matted pieces is usually a 1/4" , and the outside border surrounding the photographs is 3 - 4 inches.
